PocketGeologist invites you to uncover the hidden stories of Prison Hill—one of the region’s premier panoramas and geology playgrounds. Tucked in a spot with sweeping views, this geocache challenges you to don the hat of a field geologist. Explore the diverse natural materials gathering here from the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods!
This terrain is rich in iron-bearing minerals, staining many rock varieties with bright yellows, browns, and deep oranges. Ever see an orange and yellow quartz crystal? Well, you will here!
The best part? You may be one of the lucky geologists that finds super special surprises in this cache!
Just a few of the awesome rocks you'll find here:
Andesite
Granite
Granodiorite
Hornblendite
Limestone
Schist
Shale
Sandstone
Mica-bearing Varieties
And incredible crystals!
Quartz - both clear and milky
Epidote - green sparkles and euhedral varieties
Black Tourmaline - black sparkles and euhedral varieties
Garnet – deep red euhedral (though rare, it's there!)
And my favorite: Druzy Quartz - dusty sparkles that cover many of the different rocks like nature’s glitter—as you climb higher, more surfaces glint in the sun, from translucent coatings to frosty sparkles in crevices. Pure wonderment when the light hits right!
