第１疏水にある竪坑です。深さは約47m。
第１トンネルを掘るために、山の両側から掘り進むほか、山の上から垂直に穴を掘り、そこからも両側に掘り進めて工期を早める「竪坑方式」を日本で初めて採用したそうです。
「びわ湖疏水船」の乗船中、第１竪坑の下を通過する際に、竪坑内部を見ることができます。竪坑内部の壁から涌き出た多くの地下水が舟の屋根を打ち付ける様子を体感できます。
決して施設内には立ち入らないでください。

This is the vertical shaft located at the First Canal. It is approximately 47 meters deep.
In order to excavate the First Tunnel, the “vertical shaft method” was adopted for the first time in Japan. This method involves excavating from both sides of the mountain, as well as digging a vertical hole from the top of the mountain and then excavating from both sides to expedite the construction schedule.
