The Wolastoq River and Oromocto First Nation
Long before Europeans arrived, the Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) people lived along the banks of the Wolastoq, meaning “Beautiful River”, now known as the Saint John River. This vital waterway served as a source of food, transportation, and connection for the Indigenous communities that thrived here for generations.
The Oromocto First Nation is part of the Wolastoqiyik Nation and has a deep-rooted relationship with the river and surrounding lands. The name Oromocto is believed to come from the Wolastoqey word meaning “deep water” or “good river,” reflecting the importance of this place in traditional life.
Today, the Oromocto First Nation works to preserve its language, culture, and traditions while building a strong future for its members. This cache is placed in respectful recognition of the enduring presence and history of the Wolastoqiyik in this region.
