Le 15 août 1944, alors que les troupes alliées débarquent en Provence, les maquisards mazamétains appuyés par les commandos américains de l'OSS (Office of Strategic Services, l'ancêtre de la CIA) parachutés quelques jours plus tôt, sabotèrent le Pont de Gauthard pour arrêter un train allemand se rendant sur les lieux du Débarquement en empruntant la ligne Mazamet - Bédarieux aujourd'hui démantelée.
Une plaque apposée sur une des piles du pont rappelle cet épisode important de la Libération dans le Tarn.
On August 15, 1944, as Allied troops landed in Provence, Mazamet resistance fighters, supported by American commandos from the OSS (Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner of the CIA) who had parachuted in a few days earlier, sabotaged the Gauthard Bridge to stop a German train traveling to the landing beaches via the now-dismantled Mazamet-Bédarieux rail line.
A plaque affixed to one of the bridge piles commemorates this important episode of the Liberation in the Tarn département.
