La carte géologique montre clairement que l’on se trouve ici sur l’emplacement d’un important niveau de pyroxénites et amphibolites.Sur l’estran, on peut suivre facilement cet affleurement. Il est marqué par une demi-douzaine de chicots bien alignés entre eux et dans le prolongement du phare.
Cette roche massive, à grain très fin, présente un litage, un rubanement souligné par une alternance de niveaux millimétriques à centimétriques de couleur gris clair, tirant parfois sur le vert et de couleur gris sombre à noir.
- Les niveaux clairs, leucocrates, blanc grisâtre, sont riches en pyroxène et en plagioclase. On peut y trouver aussi du quartz, du sphène et du grenat (grossulaire) et en moindre quantité, des minéraux comme l’épidote, la chlorite et la zoïsite exclusivement secondaires. Il s'agit d'une pyroxénite.
- Les niveaux sombres sont en revanche riches en amphibole vert clair à vert noir (hornblende), en biotite, en plagioclase basique, en oxydes ferro-titanés et en sphène. Leur structure est également finement litée (quelques millimètres d'épaisseur). Des lits sombres à hornblende et biotite prédominantes alternent avec des lits quartzo-feldspathiques clairs, parfaitement plans et réguliers. Il s'agit d'une amphibolite.
Chacun des chicots est donc constitué d’un mélange hétérogène de pyroxénite et d’amphibolite. La roche en question est une pyroxéno-amphibolite.
Le site permet d'observer un autre affleurement présentant un mélange de deux roches complètement différentes l’une de l’autre que l’on observe côte à côte !
On observe une roche brunâtre, de couleur un peu rouille, très finement rubanée, litée et légèrement plissée en grandes ondulations, à grain très fin. Il s’agit d’une métapélite formée par une alternance de lits clairs constitués de petits cristaux de plagioclase, de feldspath (moins abondant) et de quartz et de lits sombres riches en biotite (on peut aussi y trouver de la cordiérite et de la sillimanite). Cette richesse en biotite et l’absence de gros cristaux de feldspath indique qu’il s’agit plus précisément d’un paragneiss.
Au-dessus, affleure une grosse masse blanchâtre, formant finalement comme un « filon ». Ce « filon » à texture porphyroïde est surtout constitué d’énormes cristaux de plagioclase (oligoclase) aux faces bien exprimées et luisantes au soleil du matin et de quartz. La muscovite est plutôt rare. Cette roche est une pegmatite, c’est-à-dire une roche de même composition chimique et minéralogique que le granite mais à très gros cristaux.
On se trouve donc bien là en face de deux roches très différentes l’une de l’autre : un paragneiss ocre, plus ou moins ferrugineux, et une pegmatite bien blanche.
The geological map clearly shows that this is the location of a significant layer of pyroxenites and amphibolites.
On the foreshore, this outcrop can be easily followed. It is marked by half a dozen well-aligned snags extending from the lighthouse.
This massive, very fine-grained rock exhibits layering and banding, highlighted by alternating millimeter- to centimeter-scale layers of light gray, sometimes tending toward green, and dark gray to black.
- The light, leucocratic, grayish-white layers are rich in pyroxene and plagioclase. Quartz, sphene, and garnet (grossular) can also be found, along with lesser amounts of minerals such as epidote, chlorite, and zoisite, which are exclusively secondary. This is a pyroxenite, a metamorphic rock.
- The dark layers, on the other hand, are rich in light green to green-black amphibole (hornblende), biotite, basic plagioclase, ferro-titanium oxides, and sphene. Their structure is also finely bedded (a few millimeters thick). Dark beds predominantly composed of hornblende and biotite alternate with light, perfectly flat and regular quartz-feldspathic beds. This is an amphibolite, a metamorphic rock.
Each of the snags is therefore composed of a heterogeneous mixture of pyroxenite and amphibolite. The rock in question is a pyroxeno-amphibolite.
The site offers another outcrop presenting a mixture of two completely different rocks, seen side by side!
We observe a brownish rock, slightly rusty in color, very finely banded, layered and slightly folded into large undulations, with a very fine grain. It is a metapelite formed by alternating light-colored beds made up of small crystals of plagioclase, feldspar (less abundant), and quartz, and dark beds rich in biotite (cordierite and sillimanite can also be found). This richness in biotite and the absence of large feldspar crystals indicates that it is more precisely a paragneiss.
Above, a large whitish mass outcrops, ultimately forming a "vein." This porphyritic-textured "vein" is mainly composed of enormous plagioclase (oligoclase) crystals with well-defined faces that shine in the morning sun, and quartz. Muscovite is rather rare. This rock is a pegmatite, that is, a rock with the same chemical and mineralogical composition as granite but with very large crystals.
We are therefore faced with two very different rocks: an ochre paragneiss, more or less ferruginous, and a very white pegmatite.
