Once upon a leafy morning in the heart of the woods, three best friends—Rascal the Raccoon, Willow the Fox, and Nutter the Squirrel—tumbled down the hill to the sparkling river. The sun was shining, the water was cool, and the day was far too perfect for anything responsible like gathering food.
They raced over rocks, leapt from log to log, splashed each other silly, and played games only wild things understand. As the sun crept overhead and their bellies began to grumble, Rascal finally declared:
“Time for lunch! I hid our snacks in the shade by the old oak!”
They scampered up the hill, past the iron rail, and around the bend to where their food should’ve been… but the spot was empty.
“Gone?” Willow sniffed the ground.
“Vanished!” Nutter squeaked, his tail twitching in panic.
Just then, a low chuckle drifted down from the treetops.
“CAW-HAW!” came the call of Cora the Crow, her feathers glinting in the sunlight. “You think I didn’t see you having all the fun?”
The three friends blinked up at her.
“While you played, I borrowed your lunch. Hid it somewhere clever, I did! Near the edge, but not too far… if you want it back, you’ll need to use your wits.”
And with a flutter of black wings, she was gone.
The raccoon, the fox, and the squirrel looked at each other and grinned. Because while Cora might be clever, they were a team.
