The medieval stairways to Cluj Cetățuia Hill—also known as the Cetățuia Belvedere—are a hidden historical gem in the heart of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Winding their way up the steep hillside, these old stone steps offer not just a path to the panoramic viewpoint above, but a journey through the city’s layered past.
Originally built in the 18th century as part of the access infrastructure to the Austrian fortress constructed on Cetățuia Hill, the stairways have since evolved into a symbol of the city’s blend of natural beauty and fortified heritage. Though the fortress itself is largely in ruins, remnants of its structure—along with the stairways and defensive terraces—hint at its strategic importance in Transylvania’s turbulent history.
Today, the Belvedere stairways are popular with both locals and tourists. As you climb, you're flanked by old retaining walls and wild vegetation, giving the route a timeless atmosphere. At the top, the reward is a sweeping 360-degree view of Cluj-Napoca: rooftops, spires, and the Someșul Mic river unfolding below. It’s one of the best vantage points in the city, especially at sunset.
In recent years, there has been increased interest in restoring and preserving this route. While some parts have been modernized or reinforced, the stairs still retain a rustic charm, connecting the modern city to its fortified origins.
