Geocache Description:

Entrenched Castle

It was around about 2am when Woody arrived just outside the crumbling ruins of the old King’s Castle. The Cross River flowed quietly behind him, and in its centre sat a perfectly round island, eerie and silent under the moon.

Dougo appeared next, dripping from the riverbank and dragging a backpack twice his size. “That island? Creepy. A duck watched me the whole way. Swear it knew things.”

Sloth followed soon after, calm as mist, chewing licorice and dragging a rusted sword. “There’s a gap in the wall,” he said. “Roughly forty paces east of the island. It’s open.”

They were here for one reason: to poach the King’s treasure, without being caught.

They crept along the mossy wall until they found the narrow opening, hidden behind vines and roots. One by one, they slipped through.

A faint trail wound downward, curving to the left. It led them into the vast Grand Hall, silent, shattered, and soaked in moonlight. Tattered banners hung like ghosts. They stayed close to the left wall, barely breathing.

At the far end, they found a few corridors, however one of them was different. The air inside was dry. Too dry.

After a few minutes of walking, Sloth pointed, another small opening on the left wall.

They entered. Another corridor. They went right first, dead end. Nothing but dust and old crates.

So they turned back and went left.

The roof above was lined with rusted spikes, ready to claim their next victim. Sloth noticed first and told everyone to watch their heads and not get impaled, they wished they had brought helmets. Nevertheless, they crept forward, careful as whispers.

Then, the light broke through.

A chamber opened before them, lit through a cracked dome above. Dust drifted like gold in the air. In the centre stood a stone pedestal, and on it: glittering coins, goblets, a humming sword, and a crown that seemed to watch them back.

Dougo whispered, “We actually found it.”

Sloth picked up a coin. “Still warm.”

Woody opened his sack. “Quickly.”

They packed light. Fast. Then, somewhere deep in the castle, something shifted. The walls groaned. And a low, breathless sound echoed through the stones, they weren’t alone...
