Św. Jan Nepomucen to patron spowiedników, szczerej spowiedzi, dobrej sławy i tonących. W tradycji ludowej chronił pola i zasiewy przed klęskami żywiołowymi, powodzią, ale i suszą. Swięty Jan Nepomucen od wieków obecny jest nad rzekami, przy mostach i rozstajach dróg – w Polsce znajduje się ponad 2500 jego figur. Istnienie figury w Lubiczu, podobnie jak w wielu innych miejscowościach, jest związane z kultem tego świętego jako opiekuna wód i miejsc, w których one występują i ma na celu zapewnienie ochrony przed ewentualnymi powodziami.
Popularna legenda głosi, że Jan był spowiednikiem królowej Czech i odmówił wyjawienia królowi tego, co mu wyznała w spowiedzi. Rozgniewany król kazał poddać go torturom i zrzucić w kajdanach z Mostu Karola. Uznawany jest za pierwszego męczennika tajemnicy spowiedzi.
W ikonografii św. Jan ukazywany jest w stroju kapłana, w ręku trzyma krzyż i palmę męczeństwa. Niekiedy trzyma palec na ustach, symbol zachowania tajemnicy spowiedzi. Jego atrybuty to: klucz, książka, krzyż, zapieczętowany list, most, wieniec z gwiazd z napisem w środku tacui-milczałem.

St. John of Nepomuk is the patron saint of confessors, sincere confessions, good reputation, and the drowning. In folk tradition, he protected fields and crops from natural disasters, floods, and drought. For centuries, St. John of Nepomuk has been present along rivers, bridges, and crossroads – there are over 2,500 statues of him in Poland. The existence of the statue in Lubicz, as in many other places, is linked to the belief of this saint as the protector of water and places where it occurs, and is intended to provide protection against potential floods.
A popular legend has it that John was the confessor of the Queen of Bohemia and refused to reveal to the king what she had confessed to him in confession. The enraged king ordered him to be tortured and thrown in chains from Charles Bridge. He is considered the first martyr of the seal of confession.
In the iconography of St. John of Nepomuk, the saint is depicted as the first martyr of the seal of confession. John is depicted in priestly attire, holding a cross and the palm of martyrdom. Sometimes he holds a finger to his lips, symbolizing the secrecy of confession. His attributes include a key, a book, a cross, a sealed letter, a bridge, and a wreath of stars with the inscription tacui (I remained silent) inside.
