This stretch of Eaton Road was once the village green,
but now just this tiny section remains “green”;
sadly, the rest has gradually been taken over for housing.
Behind the green is a row of three pretty thatched almshouses.
The first of these was given by yeoman John Southby and
husbandman Robert West to the Church in 1571.
The rent paid went towards repairs to the church, and the tenant had to open
he house and garden for everyone to enjoy in the week before Whitsun.
The adjoining cottages were latter gifted to the
Church in the early 17th century.
All remain in charitable ownership to this day.
