Geocache Description:

The late Ralph Ballinger, a renowned local horticulturalist, had a vision to see a 'Trees of the World' arboretum established along the Taylor River Floodway Reserve.

The stated purpose of the arboretum is to establish a collection of specimen trees from around the world that reflects and embraces all nations and cultures, enhances this popular public space and educates through interpretation.

Ralph's hope was for the trees to provide a symbol of unity and promote understanding among all people by embracing trees from all nationalities.

The arboretum (collection of trees) totals JKL trees that were planted on annual community planting days between 2014 and 2018.

Along with the arboretum planting, indigenous riparian plantings along the river's edge also took place as part of the Taylor River Enhancement Project. This was a Marlborough Landscape Group and Marlborough District Council joint initiative.

To go for a walk and bond with some trees, use the QR code or link from the information board. You can then track your location and click on any tree to get information on each one you visit.
