This is Vestmannaeyjar Harbour, and while you wait for the ferry to take you back to the mainland, you have a great view of the sheep grazing on Heimaklettur. (Well, in summer you do. In the autumn, they are herded off this paradise in the sky and off to an even scarier slaughterhouse... you can´t defy EVERY death)
Looks scary up there. So many questions! How DO they manage to stay up there? How many sheep plunge to a splattering death at the bottom? And is that preferable to the slaughterhouse?
If you want to defy death yourself, there is a walking trail up there, although very steep. There are ladders to climb and chains to hang on to, I understand. Be careful. Heimaklettur is 279 meters tall, and its name translates to "Home Rock."
There is a terrific playground / picnic area here, and the beluga whale sanctuary is close by.
I also recommend walking up Eldfell if you have the time - it erupted over fifty years ago but is still warm at the top! Amazing to feel. I have a cache at the spot where the walk starts. There is a parking spot there if you have a car.
Pssst... Want to find an extra, supersecret cache? I placed one, but only found out after I had left the island that it was too close to another cache. However, this spot is well worth a visit. Coordinates are N 063 26.465 W 020 15.882 . The cache is in a crack if you go behind the facade on the left and look into the hillside. Let me know if you find it! :D Sorry that you can't log it, though...
As with all my caches, assistance with maintenance is gratefully accepted. If the cache is missing from its obvious spot, feel free to replace it. If the log is wet or full, feel free to throw it away and replace it with any piece of paper you may have in your pocket :)
