Skipton is full of interesting locations you wouldn't normally visit unless you lived close by, so we thought we would place a series of caches highlighting some of the places we love.
This particular cache is placed near Coronation Garden, also known as Soroptomist's Garden.
In 1953, to celebrate the Queen's Coronation, a plot of derelict land on Newmarket Street was converted into a garden are by Skipton Soroptomists and was named Coronation Garden, with an extension added in 1975. This garden provides a place for residents and visitors to rest and enjoy this area of our town.
Inside the garden you will find a memorial bench and plaque dedicated to local lad, Sgt Gareth "The Bull" Thursby, who was killed at an army checkpoint in Afghanistan in 2012, shortly before his 30th birthday.
In 2023, a team of Gareth's former colleagues carried the 110KG bench from the home of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment in Halifax to Skipton to raise money for a local charity.
