Geocache Description:

This is the site of what is left of the federal prison that had the massive outbreak of smallpox during the civil war.
I have recently found a personal connection to this prison. I was doing my Family Tree and discovered that my Great Great Grandfather Allen Green Joplin was captured on Dec 25, 1863 in Ripley Co. Mo and was sentenced to hard labor at this prison. He was released on May 8, 1865.

This is a 35mm film canister and just a paper with history of the site on it and a log sheet (no pencil). Park on the street, the parking lot is no trespassing for parking but i don't think it is enforced.
