Þrístapi is a windswept, site in the west of Iceland, forever linked to a dark chapter in the nation’s history. Here, in 1830, the last execution in Iceland took place.
Agnes Magnúsdóttir and Friðrik Sigurðsson were convicted of a brutal double murder at Illugastaðir. On January 12th, 1830, they were brought here, to this very site, and beheaded with an axe. Their execution marked the final time capital punishment was carried out in Iceland.
Today, a memorial stands at Þrístapi — the execution site marked by a wooden stake and an axe embedded in stone. It is a solemn reminder of Iceland’s past, set in a landscape that feels both beautiful and haunting.
