The Holiday Drive In

The Holiday Drive-In opened its doors — or more accurately, its gates — in 1953 at 28th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Boulder, Colorado. It quickly became a favorite local destination, offering a chance to watch the latest films from the comfort of the family car, often under a canopy of summer stars. In 1969, the theater relocated to North Boulder at 28th Street and Lee Hill Road, where its towering neon marquee became a well-known landmark visible from far down the road. For nearly two decades, the Holiday Drive-In was a hub for families, friends, and couples, complete with a concession stand serving popcorn, candy, and sodas to accompany double-feature nights. By the late 1980s, the popularity of drive-in theaters had declined across the country, and in 1988 the Holiday screened its last film. The site sat quiet until the early 2000s, when it was transformed into the Holiday Neighborhood — a mixed-use community designed to honor the location’s history. The original marquee was preserved and designated a City of Boulder landmark, standing today as a nostalgic reminder of a time when summer evenings meant movies under the open sky.
