Geocache Description:

Welcome to the next installment in my Creatures of Table Mountain series!

Klipspringer

Klipspringers (Oreotragus oreotragus) are small diurnal (awake during the day) antelopes, primarily browsing herbivores, accustomed to mountainous terrain. They form territories of a breeding pair and their offspring. Klipspringers are most often seen as solitary, pairs or family groups of three and found in southern and east Africa. A beautiful little antelope!

Klipspringers were reintroduced to Table Mountain National Park after being hunted to local extinction in the early 1930s. They are known for their preference for rocky terrain and can be spotted on outcrops throughout the mountain. The reintroduction began with a release of 19 animals in the Cape of Good Hope section in 1999, followed by releases on the Back Table in 2003 and 2005.

Creatures of Table Mountain series

This geocache series runs along the closed-off section of Tafelberg Road and introduces some of the fascinating creatures you're likely to spot on the mountain. Each cache includes an info card with fun facts, and links to more detailed information if you’d like to learn more.

This is an easy, mostly flat walk along a tarred road with stunning views of the City Bowl, all set against the dramatic backdrop of Table Mountain. Since the road has been closed to vehicle traffic, you’ll have the full width of the road to enjoy on foot. It's ideal for those who want the mountain experience without a strenuous hike. The path is suitable for bikes, strollers, children, and dogs.

All caches are located just off the road and are easily accessible.

A few tips before you go:

  • This north-facing slope can get very hot in summer – bring a hat and plenty of water.

  • It can also get very windy, so a light jacket is recommended.

  • Comfortable walking shoes are essential.

  • Even though this is well frequented path - always walk in a group.

Cache location:

The cache is easily reached with your feet on the tar road - no scrambling is required. This one is slightly more difficult as there is NO spoiler pic!

Please replace as found.

Happy Hunting
