Mount Hood

Mount Hood is the highest peak in Oregon, standing at 11,240 feet (3,426 meters). It’s a dormant stratovolcano located about 50 miles (80 km) east of Portland, within the Cascade Range. While it hasn’t had a major eruption in centuries, it is still considered potentially active, with the most recent minor eruptive activity recorded in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
The mountain is a year-round outdoor destination. In winter, it’s home to multiple ski resorts, including Timberline Lodge (which operates the only year-round lift-served skiing in North America) and Mount Hood Meadows. In summer, it’s popular for hiking, climbing, and mountaineering — although the climb is considered technical and potentially dangerous due to crevasses, avalanches, and sudden weather changes.
Mount Hood also holds cultural and historical significance. It was known to Native American tribes long before European settlers arrived, and it remains a prominent symbol in Oregon’s landscape. The Timberline Lodge, built in the 1930s as part of a Works Progress Administration project, is a National Historic Landmark and famously appeared in The Shining as the exterior of the Overlook Hotel.
Geologically, it’s part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, and its snow-capped profile is visible from much of northern Oregon and even parts of Washington. The glaciers on Mount Hood are important water sources for the surrounding region, feeding rivers that support agriculture and communities.
Stratovolcano

A stratovolcano, or composite volcano, is a large, steep-sided volcanic mountain formed by multiple layers of hardened lava, volcanic ash, and rock fragments from past eruptions. These volcanoes typically have a symmetrical, cone-like shape and can rise thousands of meters above their surroundings. They form in regions where tectonic plates converge, especially at subduction zones, where one plate sinks beneath another.
Stratovolcano eruptions can be both explosive and effusive (lava flows), but they are especially known for violent eruptions because their magma is usually thick (viscous) and traps gases. When the pressure becomes too high, the magma can blast out, producing pyroclastic flows, ash clouds, and lava domes. Over time, repeated eruptions build up the alternating layers that give the stratovolcano its distinctive structure. Many of the world’s most famous peaks — such as Mount Fuji in Japan, Mount Vesuvius in Italy and Mount Hood in the United States — are stratovolcanoes.
