On Quincy Hill in Hancock, Michigan, just up from the turn out. Good parking and a short walk. Short trail to the site and this is a good spot to view the two cities of Houghton and Hancock on the Portage Canel. The overlook is a catch basin made from old tailings from the Quincy Copper mine. Watch your step! Pictures Please!!!
We wanted to explain the name of our cache in Michigan's upper peninsula, located in Hancock.... Kowsit Lats. It is the name on the highway sign of a street of that name and it comes from a location that was named by someone with a sense of humor! There are many that settled in the Copper Country that are of Finnish heritage and in the early times, all those families spoke was the Finnish language. Over time, as these Finns learned English, the Finnish accent remained heavy and it lent to the "colour" of the heritage of the Copper Country! The name"Kowsit Lats" is how the Copper Country Finns pronounced the indigenous name of the location that was a cow pasture and in proper English it would be spelled "Cowsh*t Flats"! Container is a one gallon camouflaged container. *** Starting contents are: Pink & black Furby, Alphabit letter die, Fossil shells in limestone from near the Light at the end of the Tun...er...Road cache, Kewayden tokin coin from the Cedar River cache, Car / Home key rings, Blue crystal Crab, Blue crystal Lobster, 2 suction cups, 2 marbles, STP key ring, Swallow Inn drink tokin from Pine Barron cache. *** Rehide the cache better than you find it as this is an exposed area with lots of people coming and going. BTW... this is a REAL place name Check out the JPGs! **** New location on July 29, 03! Hopefully this will be a better spot. Looks like there may be some sort of construction here, stakes with orange makers
