Whitecross Village Hall
The well-apointed small Village Hall at Whitecross was originally the village school that served the rural area witnin the Parish of Lanteglos-by-Fowey.
Whitecross Village Hall was built in 1896 to house the local village school. Following the closure of the school in 1948, the Village Hall Committee acquired the hall. Whitecross Village Hall is now a Charitable Trust run by volunteer trustees for the benefit of local residents and the wider community..
There is an interesting account of the history of the building on the Whitecross Village Hall Website.
The website of the hall indicates that it remains to this day as an active centre for a range of activities and events. Indeed, whilst placing the cache, I was suddenly "muggled" by the arrival of several cars cotaining ladies clutching yoga mats and heading in for a scheduled pilates class.
Once a month the hall hosts a local produce market and the nearby phone box has been adapted to become a seed exchange hub.
About 12 years ago, my wife and I attended a talk in the hall given by the BBC Gardener's Question Time panel member, Bob Flowerdew, who explained how to prepare your garden for cultivation without the need for digging - a technique that we successfully used in our garden at that time.
Whitecross is relatively close to Fowey but requires a journey across the River Fowey on the Bodinnick Car Ferry which, in 2025, cost £6.20 one way.
Alternativey, the area can be accessed from Lostwitiel via Lerryn and St Veep along fairly narrow lanes.
The area around Polruan, Lanteglos and Lansallos is an atmospheric part of Cornwall that rarely gets crowded even in peak season but includes some great stretches of the South West Coast Path overlooking Lantic Bay.
