Geocache Description:

The Dartmouth marine railway was completed in April 1861 and was the last link in the Shubenacadie Canal, finally fulfilling the nearly 100-year-old dream of a navigable waterway across the province. Using gears and a turbine to harness the power of the water flowing from Sullivan’s Pond, the Flume House controlled the Dartmouth Marine Railway from 1861-1871, allowing boats to travel from the Halifax Harbour into the Pond and to the Shubenacadie Canal waterway. The water flow powered a boat-carrying cradle up and down the set of tracks that existed between the pond and the Harbour.

The Flume House and the boat cradle were reconstructed in 2014 and installed in Starr Park. You can find interperative panels around the Flume House to learn more about the history and importance of the marine railway in Dartmouth, or stop in during the summer for a guided tour of the site!

This cache is up high! You shouldn't need to climb anything, but if you're a little shorter (like me) you might need a pen or branch to get at the container.
