Acciambellato su una collinetta verdeggiante, Cisternino è un antico paese, distrutto dai goti e riscostruito dai monaci basiliani che nel Medioevo vi costruirono la badia attorno a cui si sviluppa il paese. Il centro storico è intimo e caratteristico, bianco, lastricato e punteggiato da vasi di fiori colorati. Premiato da Touring Club Italiano con la Bandiera Arancione, il borgo ha mantenuto intatto il fascino all’orientale con le case basse, i cortili nascosti, le scalette, l’intrico di vicoletti, gli archetti. Attorno alla piazza centrale Vittorio Emanuele si snodano quattro rioni. Nei pressi della porta Grande si avvistano una torre normanna e la chiesa romanica di S. Nicola. Camminando fino alla piazza Garibaldi ci si può affacciare dal belvedere per la più bella vista sulla Valle dell’Itria con i borghi che la punteggiano. Ma c’è un profumo che inebria l’aria quando ci addentra tra i vicoli, e infatti oggi l’attrazione più celebre del paese è culinaria. Ciò che lo ha reso famoso soprattutto tra gli amanti del buon cibo sono infatti i fornelli, osterie in cui si cucina a ogni ora del giorno bombette di carne, involtini, braciole infilate sullo spiedo, e che sono il vanto gastronomico dell’intera valle ma di cui Cisternino è proclamata capitale indiscussa. [Fonte: https://www.italia.it/it/puglia/cisternino]

Questa multi vi porterà alla scoperta di alcuni angoli del Centro Storico...e oltre!  

Step 1: Da Via Mulini Vecchi, ci si addentra nel Centro Storico oltrepassando un ingresso in pietra, probabilmente appartenente in passato ad un'abitazione privata (si può vedere, a sinistra, un camino!). Una volta superato, guardatevi alle spalle e troverete delle scale con diverse citazioni di poeti più o meno famosi. Cercate la frase dell'anonimo e, in particolare, contate il numero di lettere dell'ultima parola nella prima riga (A).

Recatevi a: N 40° 44.[(A*62) + 3]′ E 17° 25.[(A*73) + 5]′

Step 2: Passeggiando per le viuzze del Centro Storico, si giunge alla piazza principale del paese, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, su cui si staglia la caratteristica Torre dell'Orologio. Qui troverete anche alcune delle bracerie che rendono famosa Cisternino, e se siete fortunati verrete inebriati dal profumo dei fornelli! Guardatevi intorno e cercate una vecchia insegna dei Sali & Tabacchi: vi servirà il numero della ricevitoria (B).

Recatevi quindi a: N 40° 44.(B - 338)′ E 17° 25.(B - 252)′

Step 3: Uscendo dal Centro Storico attraverso la Porta Grande, troverete a destra una Torre Normanna, a sinistra la chiesa romanica di S. Nicola. Ci si dirige poi verso il belvedere: al suo ingresso, prima del monumento ai caduti, troverete su una delle lastre del pavimento un'iscrizione. Prendete l'anno di inaugurazione (C).

Recatevi poi a: N 40° 44.(C - 1371)′ E 17° 25.(C - 1507)′

Step 4: Non tutti sanno che la chiesa del Santo Patrono di Cisternino si trova qui, e non nel centro storico come accade di solito in altri paesi. Secondo la leggenda, qui apparve San Quirico durante la peste del XVII secolo, liberando Cisternino dall’epidemia. In segno di gratitudine, gli abitanti del paese costruirono all’inizio del 1600 questa chiesa, dedicata a San Quirico e a sua madre, Santa Giulitta. Sulla destra rispetto all'entrata troverete il busto di un papa: cercate l'anno alla base del busto (D).

Adesso potrete raggiungere finalmente il Final a queste coordinate: N 40° 44.(C - 1431 + A)′ E 17° 25.[D - (B*2) + 35]′

 Perched on a green hill, Cisternino is an ancient town, destroyed by the Goths and rebuilt by the Basilian monks who, in the Middle Ages, built the abbey around which the town developed. The historic center is intimate and charming, white, paved, and dotted with colorful flower pots. Awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, the village has retained its oriental charm with low houses, hidden courtyards, staircases, a maze of alleys, and small arches. Around the main square, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, four districts unfold. Near the Porta Grande, you can spot a Norman tower and the Romanesque church of San Nicola. Walking up to Piazza Garibaldi, you can enjoy the viewpoint offering the most beautiful view of the Itria Valley dotted with villages. But there’s a scent that fills the air as you wander through the alleys, and indeed today the town’s most famous attraction is culinary. What has made it especially famous among food lovers are the “fornelli,” taverns where, at any hour of the day, one can enjoy bombette (stuffed meat rolls), involtini, and pork chops on the spit—culinary delights that are the pride of the entire valley, and of which Cisternino is proclaimed the undisputed capital. This multi-cache will take you to discover some corners of the Historic Center… and beyond!

Step 1: From Via Mulini Vecchi, enter the Historic Center through a stone entrance, probably once part of a private house (on the left, you can see a fireplace!). Once inside, look back and you will find stairs with various quotes from more or less famous poets. Find the anonymous quote and, in particular, count the number of letters in the last word of the first line (A).

Then go to: N 40° 44.[(A*62) + 3]′ E 17° 25.[(A*73) + 5]′

Step 2: Strolling through the alleys of the Historic Center, you reach the main square of the town, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, where the characteristic Clock Tower stands. Here you will also find some of the grills that make Cisternino famous, and if you’re lucky, you’ll be captivated by the aroma of the cooking! Look around for an old Sali & Tabacchi sign: you will need the number of the shop (B).

Then go to: N 40° 44.(B - 338)′ E 17° 25.(B - 252)′

Step 3: Leaving the Historic Center through Porta Grande, you will find a Norman Tower on the right and the Romanesque church of San Nicola on the left. Then head towards the viewpoint: at its entrance, just before the war memorial, you will find an inscription on one of the pavement slabs. Take the year of inauguration (C).

Then go to: N 40° 44.(C - 1371)′ E 17° 25.(C - 1507)′

Step 4: Not everyone knows that the church of Cisternino’s Patron Saint is located here, and not in the historic center as usually happens in other towns. According to legend, San Quirico appeared here during the plague of the 17th century, freeing Cisternino from the epidemic. In gratitude, the townspeople built this church at the beginning of the 1600s, dedicated to San Quirico and his mother, Santa Giulitta. On the right of the entrance, you will find a bust of a pope: take the year at the base of the bust (D).
