A gödöllői Kálvária története
A Kálváriát Grassalkovich I. Antal gróf kezdte el építtetni halála évében, 1771-ben, és fia, Grassalkovich II. Antal fejezte be, így 1775-ben szentelhették fel. A kivitelezést valószínűleg Mayerhoffer András, a barokk kastély tervezője irányította.
A tetején Krisztus keresztre feszítése jelenete áll, két oldalán a két latorral.
A Kálvária a gödöllői Erzsébet-parkban áll, a Táncsics Mihály utca közelében. Szabadon látogatható, jól megközelíthető, barokk stílusú létesítményként a park kiemelt látványossága.

The History of the Gödöllő Calvary
- Construction and Patronage
The Calvary was commissioned by Count Antal Grassalkovich I in the year of his death, 1771, and completed by his son, Antal Grassalkovich II. It was consecrated in 1775. The construction was most likely directed by András Mayerhoffer, the architect of the baroque palace.
Built on flat ground rather than on a hill, it stands atop a square-shaped stone structure with rounded corners. Curved staircases rise from both sides, flanked by pierced stone balustrades with rococo patterns. At the top is the scene of Christ’s crucifixion, flanked by the two thieves. At the foot of the cross stand the statues of the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and Saint John; the figures of Mary and John are original, while that of Mary Magdalene was added in 1827 as a replacement.
The interior of the Calvary did not serve liturgical purposes; it was a hollow stone structure functioning as a water reservoir lined with red marble. Water from the Pazsaki Spring was led here through clay pipes and used for irrigating the palace gardens. Later, water from the Swan Lake was pumped here with the help of steam engines and then carried through underground pipes to the Upper Garden.
- Restorations and Preservation
Due to weathering and the delicate nature of its materials, the structure required several restorations: in 1827, 1931, 1961, and 1990. In 2011, with support from the Norway Grants, further restoration work was carried out, renewing the substructure, the statues, and their surroundings, making the site well-maintained once again.
- Location and Accessibility
The Calvary stands in Gödöllő’s Erzsébet Park, near Táncsics Mihály Street. It is freely accessible, easy to approach, and as a baroque-style monument, it is one of the park’s key attractions.
