This fort was built in 1898, to protect the Tampa Bay harbor. With the Spanish American War and Cuba to the south, eight 12-inch mortars, with a maximum range of 6.8 miles were mounted. These weapons were never fired in anger, but the era was significant in terms of evolution of modern weaponry. There were also two 3-inch guns, which had a maximum range of 4.5 miles. This fort is a self-guided tour, and open during daylight hours.
The coordinates bring you to the back entrance to the fort. They may be a little off, because my GPS was loosing power. There is also an entrance a little farther down the road that brings you through a gift shop with additional parking.
Your mission to claim credit for this virtual cache is to:
1. Go to the fort and enjoy the history.
2. Find the guns that were refurbished and moved to the fort. These are located at the above coordinates. E-mail me the following information:
a) Who were these guns purchased from and in what year?
b) How much does one of these guns weigh?
c) How far did this gun fire (what was their range)?
d) What was the caliber of the gun?
