Luodong [sometimes spelled “Lotung”] Sports Park (羅東運動公園) is the largest sports park in Taiwan, covering 47 hectares. The park was opened in 1986. Before that, the land was mainly farmland and rice paddies. Careful attention was paid to harmonize the artificial and the natural, with an emphasis on greenery, health, and ecology. The emerald hills in the park were inspired by the Snow Mountain Range, which stands on the western margin of Yilan County. The park features a baseball field, a swimming pool, an ecological park, a playground, basketball and tennis courts, a pond and a large lake. The park also contains more than 200 kinds of plants, 96 kinds of birds, and 102 species of insects, making Lotung Sports Park an ideal forest park for recreation, ecological education, and relaxation.
