KISPESTI ÖREG TEMETŐ TÖRTÉNETE
Kispest település az 1870-es évek elején kezdett kialakulni. 1873-ban ismerte el Pest vármegye közgyűlése Kispest néven, mely Pusztaszentlőrinc csatlakozásával 1873 decemberében nagyközségi státuszt nyert. 1950-ben csatolták Budapesthez. Kispest első temetőjét 1872 február 25-én szentelte fel Tamásfy Mátyás haraszti plébános, a mai Jézus Szíve plébánia templom helyén. Ez idő tájt létesítették az Esze Tamás utca és a dr. Jahn Ferenc utca sarkán az izraelita temetőt. Ezekbe a temetőkbe lőrincieket is temettek, ezért hamar, kb. 20-25 év alatt beteltek. Ezután új területet kellett kijelölni temetkezési helyül. A XIX. század végén, az 1890-es években kezdte meg az lehunytak befogadását a Zalaegerszeg utca 67-69. szám alatti Öreg temető. A temető legmagasabb pontján lévő kőfeszületen magyar és német nyelven olvasható: Isten dicsőségére emelték Kispest buzgó polgárai 1888. A feliratból arra lehet következtetni, hogy feltehetően az első kispesti temetőből került ide.
Sok nevezetes kispesti személyiség nyugszik az Öreg temetőben. A teljesség igénye nélkül néhány közülük: – Brandtner Pál főjegyző és fia Brandtner Ferenc orvos – Győri Ottmár a Wekerle telep építésének vezetője, majd gondnoka – Bánffy Dénes és Oláh Dénes miniszterek – Holbesz József, Máté Károly, Bogdán Gyula lelkészek – mezőmadarasi Madarassy László jogtudós, jogakadémiai tanár, író, utazó és Kispest jegyzője – Bódy János a kispesti színház alapítója, író
Az első temetők egyházi kezelésben álltak. Kispest lakosságának túlnyomó többsége római katolikus volt, ezért a katolikus egyház tartotta kezében a temetőket. Ennek ellenére felekezeti hovatartozásra tekintet nélkül, minden vallási közösség tagját saját egyházuk szertartása szerint temették.
🇬🇧 HISTORY OF THE OLD CEMETERY IN KISPEST
The settlement of Kispest began to take shape in the early 1870s. In 1873, the county assembly of Pest officially recognized it under the name Kispest, and with the annexation of Pusztaszentlőrinc in December 1873, it gained the status of a large village. In 1950, it was incorporated into Budapest.
Kispest’s first cemetery was consecrated on February 25, 1872, by parish priest Mátyás Tamásfy of Haraszti, on the site of today’s Church of the Sacred Heart. Around the same time, the Jewish cemetery was established at the corner of Esze Tamás Street and Dr. Jahn Ferenc Street. People from Lőrinc were also buried in these cemeteries, and as a result they soon became full—within about 20–25 years. A new burial ground was therefore needed.
At the end of the 19th century, in the 1890s, the Old Cemetery on Zalaegerszeg Street 67–69 began to receive the deceased. On the stone crucifix at the cemetery’s highest point, one can read in both Hungarian and German: “Erected to the glory of God by the devout citizens of Kispest, 1888.” From this inscription, it is likely that the cross was originally placed in Kispest’s first cemetery and later moved here.
Many notable figures from Kispest rest in the Old Cemetery. Without being exhaustive, here are some of them:
– Chief Notary Pál Brandtner and his son, Dr. Ferenc Brandtner
– Ottmár Győri, director and later steward of the construction of the Wekerle estate
– Ministers Dénes Bánffy and Dénes Oláh
– Pastors József Holbesz, Károly Máté, and Gyula Bogdán
– László Madarassy of Mezőmadaras, legal scholar, professor at the law academy, writer, traveler, and notary of Kispest
– János Bódy, founder of the Kispest Theater and writer
The first cemeteries were managed by the church. Since the overwhelming majority of Kispest’s population was Roman Catholic, the Catholic Church oversaw them. Nevertheless, regardless of denomination, members of all religious communities were buried according to the rites of their own faith.
