Rock the Casbah is a song from the 1982 album by The Clash entitled Combat Rock. It was their most successful single in the U.S. reaching #8 on the Billboard Top 100. The song’s lyrics describes the efforts of a Middle Eastern king to ban Western rock music in his kingdom (“Sharif don’t like it”). The events of the song are similar to an actual ban on Western music in Iran during the Iranian revolution. Towards the end of the song Joe Strummer can be heard to say “fundamentally Canadian” which is supposedly a reference to a burgeoning Canadian indie rock scene at the time.
Its a bit of a labyrinth to get here streetwise, but well worth it to find this hidden little gem of a park.
