This is the second version of this hide. The previous hiding location was too close to homes and the cache could not be relocated within the 161 metre radius. The new location is not close to any home.
About SideTracked Caches
This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath-taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website.
To find the cache you will need to visit the information board at the site of the station and find information which will reveal four digits. The location of the cache was moved in August, 2025 to be closer to the entrance and away from private property.
About the First Helensburgh Station
The first Helensburgh Station was opened on 1 January 1889 and was between two tunnels on the Wollongong Line. The original station was 2.7 metres wide and 60 metres long, later extended to 98 metres. The station only lasted to 1914 when a deviation created fewer tunnels and a double track.
It was thought the station was demolished but the platform was rediscovered in 1994 when the remains were uncovered. It is likely the remains of the rest of the platform are still underground. The tunnel is known as the Metropolitan Tunnel and is 624 metres long.
The tunnel is well known for the glow worms which are found there.
The glow worms are threatened by poor visitor behaviour. If you wish to visit, waterproof boots and lights are needed as water builds up as you walk into the tunnel. Do not touch the glow worms and don’t make excessive noise.
The new Information Signs provide information to help you and the glowworms enjoy your visit.
The cache is a short walk from the coordinates given.
