Josie is a fascinating Linne's two-toed sloth at the Oregon Zoo with a compelling story. She was born in the rainforests of northern South America but, sadly, was captured from the wild and sold into the exotic pet trade. A woman adopted Josie near Portland, mistakenly believing she was rescuing an orphan. However, as sloths require specialized care and diet that can't be easily replicated in a home environment, Josie's health began to decline. Recognizing her inability to provide Josie with proper care, the woman generously donated her to the Oregon Zoo.
Now, Josie serves as an ambassador animal, living behind the scenes at the zoo. This means she doesn't live on exhibit, but she may participate in behind-the-scenes programs and encounters with small groups of people if she chooses. Josie is described as being naturally curious and engaged around people. She enjoys interacting with her environment and enrichment items, especially using her strong sense of smell. While she doesn't make many sounds, she's occasionally heard sighing loudly. She's also known for her love of apples and can often be heard happily munching on them. However, despite her positive interactions with people, Josie values her personal space and her naps, spending a significant portion of her day sleeping, as is typical of sloths.
Through her story and interactions with the public, Josie plays a vital role in educating visitors about the negative impacts of the exotic pet trade on wild sloth populations. Zoo staff utilize her experiences to highlight the differences between ethical animal encounters and those that can harm animal welfare.
