The Kensico Dam is a massive stone structure located in Valhalla, New York, completed in 1917 to create the Kensico Reservoir. Built of granite quarried from nearby sites, the dam stands about 307 feet high and 1,843 feet long, making it one of the largest hand-hewn stone masonry dams in the world. It plays a crucial role in New York City’s water supply system, holding water from the Catskill Mountains before it continues south through the aqueduct system. The area around the dam, known as Kensico Dam Plaza, is now a popular park with open fields, walking paths, and cultural events.
