VILLAGGIO PREISTORICO
Volendo raccontarla in un solo respiro, la Valle del Menago a Bovolone è un luogo dove natura e memoria si stringono la mano. Appena oltrepassato l’ingresso, l’aria si fa più umida e profuma di erbe d’acqua: canneti che frusciano, fossati lenti, un laghetto specchiante, e due boschi ricostituiti che offrono ombra e silenzio. I sentieri si srotolano morbidi tra prati, radure perribili a piedi o in bici e qua e là compaiono aree picnic, spazi gioco e angoli didattici: un frutteto, una piccola fattoria, gli apiari che raccontano la pazienza delle stagioni e il lavoro invisibile delle api.
Il cuore del parco è un isolotto circondato dall’acqua: qui sorge il villaggio preistorico, una ricostruzione accurata che invita a un salto indietro di millenni, fino al Neolitico. Non è un set, ma un luogo “vivo”, nato a partire da dati archeologici reali e pensato per mostrare come poteva essere la vita nelle prime comunità stanziali della pianura padana. Le case in legno, argilla e paglia suggeriscono interni caldi e funzionali; i focolari parlano di cibo condiviso e veglie serali; gli utensili di pietra, osso e legno svelano l’ingegno quotidiano di chi coltivava cereali come farro e orzo, allevava animali, modellava ceramiche per conservare e cuocere, intrecciava fibre vegetali per fare corde e ceste.
Questa ricostruzione si inserisce idealmente nella geografia della preistoria veneta, che comprende villaggi a terra e insediamenti su pali in zone umide: una tradizione che ha lasciato tracce importanti in tutto l’arco alpino. Nel villaggio del Menago, guide e archeotecnici trasformano la visita in esperienza: dimostrazioni di accensione del fuoco, lavorazione della selce, modellazione dell’argilla, tiro con l’arco, racconti di scambi e relazioni tra comunità. Il risultato è un piccolo rito di passaggio: si entra curiosi, si esce con l’impressione di aver toccato con mano le radici della nostra quotidianità.
La Valle del Menago è pensata come un parco “di tutti e per tutti”: luogo di passeggiate lente e giornate in famiglia, di attività per scuole e gruppi, ma anche di semplici soste all’ombra, a osservare l’acqua muovere il cielo e i daini muoversi quieti nell’area faunistica. È un paesaggio che educa senza retorica: ti accompagna tra habitat restaurati e biodiversità tutelata, e poi ti affida alla voce del villaggio, dove il tempo degli antenati torna a parlarti di pazienza, condivisione e mestiere.
Visitarlo significa regalarsi un viaggio breve nello spazio e lungo nel tempo: dal fruscio dei pioppi alla luce del focolare neolitico, dalla calma del laghetto al gesto preciso che trasforma una scheggia di selce in coltello. Un luogo semplice e sorprendente, dove la natura fa da maestra e la storia diventa esperienza.
L'isola sulla quale si trova il villaggio è solitamente chiusa e viene aperta sono in occasioni di eventi, la si può comunque ammirare da fuori scorgendo le capanne immerse nel verde.

PREHISTORIC VILLAGE
Told in a single breath, the Valle del Menago in Bovolone is a place where nature and memory join hands. Just beyond the entrance, the air grows more humid and scented with water plants: rustling reeds, slow canals, a mirror-like pond, and two reforested woods that offer shade and silence. The paths unfurl gently among meadows and clearings, perfect for walking or cycling, and here and there picnic areas, playgrounds, and educational corners appear: an orchard, a small farm, and apiaries that tell of the patience of the seasons and the invisible labor of bees.
At the heart of the park lies an island surrounded by water, where the prehistoric village rises—an accurate reconstruction that invites visitors on a leap back in time, all the way to the Neolithic era. It is not a stage set but a “living” place, created from authentic archaeological evidence and designed to show what life was like in the first sedentary communities of the Po Valley. The houses of wood, clay, and straw suggest warm, functional interiors; the hearths speak of shared meals and evening gatherings; the tools of stone, bone, and wood reveal the daily ingenuity of those who cultivated grains such as emmer and barley, raised animals, crafted pottery for storage and cooking, and wove plant fibers into ropes and baskets.
This reconstruction fits perfectly into the broader geography of Venetian prehistory, which included both land-based villages and pile-dwelling settlements in wetland areas—a tradition that has left important traces throughout the Alpine arc. In the Menago village, guides and experimental archaeologists turn the visit into an experience: demonstrations of fire-making, flint knapping, clay modeling, archery practice, and stories of trade and community life. The result is a small rite of passage: you enter curious, and you leave with the impression of having touched the roots of our everyday life.
The Valle del Menago is designed as a park “for everyone and belonging to everyone”: a place for leisurely walks and family outings, for school activities and group visits, but also for simple pauses in the shade, watching the water move the sky and the fallow deer wander quietly in their enclosure. It is a landscape that educates without rhetoric: it leads you through restored habitats and protected biodiversity, and then entrusts you to the voice of the village, where the time of our ancestors speaks again of patience, sharing, and skill.
Visiting it means gifting yourself a short journey in space but a long one in time: from the rustle of poplars to the glow of the Neolithic hearth, from the calm of the pond to the precise gesture that turns a shard of flint into a knife. A simple yet surprising place, where nature teaches and history becomes an experience.
The island where the village stands is usually closed and only opened for special events. However, it can still be admired from the outside, with the huts peeking out from the greenery.
