The northern saw-whet owl is a small owl native to North America, known for its round head, yellow eyes, and distinctive call that resembles a saw being sharpened. It primarily inhabits dense forests and feeds mainly on small mammals like mice.
Northern saw whets were known to inhabit the vents of outhouses for nesting in the past. Their primary nesting location now is tree cavities and dense thickets.
