Welcome, or welcome back to the Strange Fish series, where I pay homage to the odd and often unloved fish species of Wisconsin. A real oddball today, the Smallmouth Buffalo. You've probably never caught one. Or if you did, you probably mistook it for a carp. Hint, the mouths are different. This guy can grow to a large size, the state record is 81 pounds. It is also one of the longer lived fish of Wisconsin. They are fairly valuable to commercial fishermen and are also frequently targeted by people bow fishing. This has been a bit hard on their population.
I caught mine upstream a bit from here. I've had to slightly alter my policy of "place the cache near the catch" for logistic reasons.
Fans of this series should enjoy this container, it was fun to construct. Please close everything up neatly. As with many of my custom caches I've put this one on a "stringer" to keep it from getting away.
