vue vers le Sud depuis la table d'orientation / view towards the south from the orientation table
To the northeast, the horizon is limited by the nearby hill of Menez Du, and to the southeast by the ridge line of Saint Tugdual, while to the south and southwest, the absence of any significant relief allows for a very long view.

The calotte is part of the Black Mountains (Menez Du), a relatively narrow and low-altitude mountain range composed mainly of hard sandstone and quartzite. Geologically, the Black Mountains form a vast and complex synclinorium between the Châteaulin Carboniferous basin to the north and the Brioverian basin to the south. This range corresponds to the southern edge of the Châteaulin basin. It stretches from east to west for about 40 km from the vicinity of Châteaulin to the vicinity of Glomel, but is no more than 10 km wide.

It appears as a double ridge separated by a central valley. These two ridges, which are part of the Hercynian folds that form the Appalachian ridges, are geologically different: Armorican sandstone and chloritoid schist for the southern ridge, Plougastel quartzite for the northern ridge. Between the two, at the level of the central valley, there is softer Silurian schist. At a single point, near Edern, Devonian terrain has completely covered the Silurian uplift, which extends westwards to the Crozon peninsula.

At Saint Joseph's peak, you are on the southern ridge of the Black Mountains, where you will find two main types of rock: solid white quartzite and schist, which can be dark slate, satin-finished with biotite, or very solid quartzite. You may need a small hammer to break the rock at the first waypoint (at the cache coordinates).

Pour valider votre découverte / To validate your discovery
This EarthCache invites you to discover two types of rock found on the Saint Joseph ice cap. Take the time to note down your observations in order to answer the three questions below.
Question 1 - At the coordinates of this EarthCache, on the right side of the path, you will find broken rock blocks. Observe these rocks and describe their colour and density. Try to break the rock with a hammer or another rock. Is the break clean?
Question 2 - Along the way, at the coordinates indicated (N 48° 10.807′ W 3° 26.392′) but also in the surrounding area, you will find a rock used to fill in ruts. Can you describe it (colour, density, friability) and name it?
Question 3 - Au WP 3 (N 48° 10.413′ W 3° 26.725′) regardez la roche au sol sur le chemin, pouvez-vous la caractériser (couleur, densité, friabilité) et la nommer ?
Question 3 - At WP3 (N 48° 10.413′ W 3° 26.725′), look at the rock on the ground along the path. Can you describe it (colour, density, friability) and name it?
Mandatory souvenir photo - At WP3, take a photo of yourself or with one of your favourite geocaching items (or even just your username written on a piece of paper or your hand) with one of the orientation tables (North or South) in the background.
