St James in Paulerspury is a well-positioned medieval church, restored in the 19th century, with a Norman font (its lunette decoration set upside down), late 19th-century stained glass, and murals by Swinfen Harris. In the chancel are wooden effigies of Sir Lawrence de Paveley and his wife from around 1340, alongside the early 17th-century Throckmorton tomb, notable for its lifelike depiction of the couple gazing at each other. The church also has strong links to William Carey, born nearby in 1761 and remembered as the “father of modern mission” for his work in India as a Baptist minister, translator, and founder of Serampore College; his memorial stands by the south door.
