📖 Background Story
Â
At the heart of Mount Vernon Square stands the Carnegie Library, opened in 1903 as Washington, D.C.’s first public library. Funded by Andrew Carnegie, it became the first desegregated public building in the city — a symbol of knowledge and inclusion.
Â
After nearly 70 years of service, the library closed its stacks and stood silent, waiting for a new chapter. That chapter began in 2019, when the historic building was carefully restored and transformed into the Apple Carnegie Library — a place where technology and history connect, much like books once connected minds. Today, it houses both the Apple Store and the DC History Center, keeping learning alive in a new way.
Â
But every great building depends on small details. Bolts, fasteners, and hidden hardware hold up the grandest structures — often overlooked, but always essential. This geocache celebrates those little pieces of strength and secrecy. Somewhere near the library’s glow, among the lamp posts of Mount Vernon Square, one bolt isn’t what it seems.
