The Assiniboine Park Zoo is a part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Saving Animals from Extinction (S.A.F.E.) North American Songbirds Program.
Pileated Woodpecker is a shockingly beautiful and large bird that is found throughout forests in Winnipeg and is sure to stop you in your tracks. You may hear the loud "piping" call or the jackhammer like drilling of them looking for insects within trees. Be sure to keep an eye out for other birds coming to Pileated Woodpecker holes to take advantage of the feeding opportunities left behind from their damage.
