Our Berry 1st Cache Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Team Berry: There was a brush fire in this area and all traces of the cache appear to be gone. We placed this cache on 01/01/2003. Thank you to the hundreds of geochachers who visited our cache over the years. We have enjoyed following all your adventures while looking for it! It was named after our dog Berry, who went to the Rainbow Bridge in 2009. The cache was located in an area of Polk County known as "Berry," which was why we placed it where we did. Hopefully, the caches that burned along the Van Fleet Trail will be replaced over time, leading to many more adventures.

Geocache Description:

Located along a secluded paved trail that crosses through the Green Swamp.

Sadly, in June, 2009, our sweet girl Berry passed away at age 14. We'll be keeping the cache active in her memory.

This is a dog-themed cache, so please exchange a doggy item. IMPORTANT: DO NOT LEAVE ANY FOOD-RELATED ITEMS…RACCOONS WILL GET INTO THE CACHE AND DESTROY IT. Also, the cache is NOT hidden in a gopher tortoise hole, so don't reach inside any.

There are three main ways to approach this cache—two by bike, one by walking. If you bring your dog, please use the walk-in entrance. The bike trips are much too long for your dog.

The Southern route is approximately a 10.5 mile bike ride (each way) and begins at the GPS coordinates: N28.10.859, W081.49.665.

For the sturdy, the Northern route is approximately an 18.5 mile bike ride (each way) and begins at the GPS coordinates: N28.34.637, W081.58.568.

To hike to the cache (approximately a .75 mile walk each way) start at GPS coordinates N28.19.138, W081.51.741.

Encrypted below, are hints for each starting point, followed by a hint for the cache site, itself.

IMPORTANT: When re-hiding the cache, please look at it from all sides to be sure that it is completely covered. We found this to be trickier than it sounds.

This cache is named for our dog Berry (short for Canberra, the capital of Australia—she’s an Australian Shepherd). BUT you’ll get extra points if you can figure out the reason why we chose this particular location to place Our Berry 1st Cache. There’s a hint for the answer encrypted below.
