Geocache Description:

The 1933 Old Millfun, or 'the 1933,' is a landmark of early 20th-century Shanghai. Completed in 1933, it was originally a Municipal Abattoir and was considered the largest and most modern slaughterhouse in the Far East. The plans were drawn by British architects, with construction overseen by the Yu Hong Ji builders using imported British cement. This building is the sole survivor of three identical structures built around the world.

As you explore the interior, you are navigating a masterpiece of functional engineering. The building's layout is a "vertical labyrinth" of spiraling ramps, interlocking bridges, and staircases. This complex network was not for aesthetics; its purpose was to guide livestock and workers, with features such as sloped walkways designed to minimize stress on the animals. Look closely at the 26 suspended bridges: their textured surfaces were built to prevent slipping, while their varying widths were used to regulate the speed of animal herds.

The building's design also incorporates clever passive engineering. The outer concrete walls are hollow to provide temperature regulation, and the windows are all positioned to face west, utilizing Shanghai's natural wind direction for ventilation. Despite its brutalist function, the building is adorned with Art Deco motifs on its columns and windows, proving that artistry was not abandoned in its industrial design.

After operating until the 1960s, the building was abandoned for a long period. It was completely restored in 2008 and has since been transformed into a creative and commercial hub. The industrial spaces that once processed livestock are now home to art galleries, boutique shops, cafes, and event venues. The building’s journey is a microcosm of Shanghai’s modern identity, showcasing how the city re-imagines its historical heritage
