Geocache Description:

Bournemouth has an abundance of history. Many fascinating historical nuggets of information are widely known amongst locals, but from time-to-time new information comes to light, making the ordinary extroadinary, and putting the story into history!

From the cache location, take a few steps to the side and view the phone box in the grounds of the "famous" hotel opposite. You'll be mistaken to think this is any old phone box!

But first, the hotel. Formerly the Durlston Court Hotel, comedian Tony Hancaock used to live here. Most recently, comedian Dave Gorman used to stay here when touring, and the hotel in its current guise features in his tour!  Nowaday, Dave lives in Bournemouth so there is no need to stay at the hotel anymore. Both Tony Hancock and Dave Gorman featured in previous "Bournemouth Past" and "Bournemouth People" geocaching series that I set in the last decade.

Back to the phone box - it was once located a short distance away on the East Cliff. Back in the day before mobile phones, phone boxes were a common feature all across the town. Celebrities staying in hotels nearby would often use the phone box to make calls to their lovers that they didn't want the hotel telephone switchboard operators to listen in to (and all that they heard to the newspapers). The phone box therefore became known as the 'lovers' line'.
