John served in the Korean War and it is quite possible that David served in Vietnam. While not killed in action, both brothers passed away within 9 months of each other – at 30 and 38 years old.
A Boatswain is one of the oldest and most versatile occupational specialties in the Navy. A BM3 is a deck seaman responsible for maintaining a ship's exterior, supervising deck crews, operating small boats, handling cargo, and performing duties like flight deck operations, search and rescue, and underway replenishment.
