On 6th October 1769, the English explorer Captain James Cook sighted and landed in New Zealand, specifically in Poverty Bay. He and his crew charted much of the country's coast and made contact with Māori people, although initial encounters involved conflict. Cook's voyage marked the beginning of European mapping and claims on New Zealand, ultimately leading to British colonisation and the formation of the modern country
