 Velebit 

S odmorišta na autocesti A1 pruža vam se širok pogled na masiv Velebita, najdužeg planinskog lanca u Hrvatskoj i dijela Dinarskog sustava. Pred vama se jasno ocrtavaju dugi paralelni grebeni i strme padine izgrađene od karbonatnih stijena. Ovaj krajolik nije slučajan – on je rezultat višemilijunskog taloženja u drevnom moru i kasnijih snažnih tektonskih pokreta.

Masiv je građen pretežno od jurskih i krednih vapnenaca i dolomita, starosti približno 200 do 65 milijuna godina. Ti su sedimenti nastali taloženjem skeleta morskih organizama poput koralja, školjkaša i foraminifera. Vapnenac je dominantno sastavljen od kalcijeva karbonata (CaCO₃), dok dolomit sadrži i magnezij (CaMg(CO₃)₂). Upravo visok udio karbonata uzrokuje svijetlu, gotovo bijelu boju stijena koju uočavate na osunčanim padinama.

Tijekom alpske orogeneze, sudar Afričke i Euroazijske ploče uzrokovao je nabiranje i potiskivanje slojeva. Sedimentni pokrov bio je komprimiran, rasjedan i uzdignut, čime su nastali dugi grebeni pružanja u smjeru sjeverozapad–jugoistok. Takva paralelna struktura tipična je za dinarski krški prostor i jasno je vidljiva u horizontu koji promatrate.

Zbog topljivosti vapnenca u blago kiseloj kišnici razvijen je izražen krški reljef. Proces otapanja može se prikazati jednadžbom: CaCO₃ + H₂CO₃ → Ca(HCO₃)₂. Posljedica su škrape, ponikve, suhe doline i prostrane krške zaravni, dok se u podzemlju razvijaju jame i špilje. Oštar prijelaz između bijelih stijena i tamnozelene vegetacije dodatno naglašava geološku građu i čistoću karbonatnog sastava.

 Velebit 

From the A1 highway rest stop you can observe the Velebit massif, the longest mountain range in Croatia and part of the Dinaric system. Long parallel ridges and steep limestone slopes dominate the skyline. This landscape reflects millions of years of marine sedimentation followed by strong tectonic compression and uplift.

The massif consists mainly of Jurassic and Cretaceous limestones and dolomites, approximately 200–65 million years old. These carbonate rocks formed from accumulated shells, coral skeletons, algae, and microscopic organisms. Limestone is composed primarily of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃), while dolomite contains calcium magnesium carbonate (CaMg(CO₃)₂), which explains the bright, whitish appearance of the exposed rock faces.

During the Alpine orogeny, the collision of the African and Eurasian plates folded, faulted, and thrust the sedimentary layers. This compression created long ridges trending northwest–southeast, a characteristic structural pattern of the Dinaric Mountains. The visible alignment of ridges directly reflects these tectonic forces.

Because limestone dissolves in slightly acidic rainwater, extensive karst developed. The simplified reaction is: CaCO₃ + H₂CO₃ → Ca(HCO₃)₂. As a result, karren, dolines, dry valleys, plateaus, pits, and caves formed. The strong contrast between white limestone and dark vegetation highlights the purity of the carbonate composition.
