Zhruba půlku lesa ani nevidíme, tvoří ji kořeny a kořenové vlášení. Lesní keška Kořenáči vám přiblíží (většině snad jen připomene) kořenový systém smrku. Ten je plochý, mělký a bez hlavního kořene (jedna hlavní funkce kořene je strom ukotvit v půdě), často trpící nedostatky vody (druhá hlavní funkce kořene je strom vyživovat), pročež právě smrky trpí častými vývraty. Kořeny smrku jsou heterotrofní (neprovozující fotosyntézu) a "zpravidla" podzemní. Kešku hledej pod kořenem vystouplým.
