Long ago, when Haymarket was still a rough clearing at the crossroads of Virginia, travelers carried with them relics from the old world. Among them was one said to be born in Paris, a charm meant to bind together two lands across the sea. It carried the weight of memory, hope, and perhaps something more—something powerful enough to draw the eye of a creature best left sleeping.
The dragon came with smoke on its breath and thunder in its wings. It descended on these woods, shaking the earth as it tore through the canopy, snapping mighty trunks like twigs. The clash of its fury can still be seen today, where three trees lie fallen in a line, scarred by the struggle. The villagers would tell you the dragon was hunting, searching for the relic that had been brought here.
But the relic was not unguarded. A lone hero, whose name is now lost to time, carried it deep into the forest. She fought the beast beneath the shadows of the trees, her courage burning brighter than fire. Blow for blow, she held her ground, buying precious moments for the relic to be hidden. The battle raged until her strength waned, and at last the dragon’s fury overtook her.
All that remains is the forest’s silence, the fallen trees, and the relic itself, tucked away in the place where she made her stand. Some say the dragon still circles above, unseen, waiting for the day when the relic is found again.
