Johnny Appleseed was born in Leominster, Massachusetts, in 1774. He began traveling west in the early 1800s, often ahead of frontier expansion. Carrying seeds from cider mills, he planted nurseries that he later sold or gifted to settlers. His approach was methodical and business-minded, leasing land and keeping records. He wore simple clothes and often went barefoot, which added to his legendary image. His efforts helped spread apple cultivation across thousands of square miles.
