DINNER PLAIN

The name "Dinner Plain" originates from a plain where a horse-drawn coach service from Bright to Omeo stopped for a midday meal in the early 1900s.

DP as the locals call it is nestled between the snow gums and is surrounded by Alpine National Park on the highest freehold land in Australia. Dinner Plain is just 10 kilometres from Mt Hotham and opened in 1986 on a 231 hectare site. It is managed by the Alpine Shire.

Prior to that, the Traditional Owners of the Dinner Plain region came from the Omeo tribe of the YAITMATANG language group. Other groups of Aboriginal people, including neighbouring Dhuduroa, Brabalung (Gunai-Kurnai) likely passed through and visited the Alpine area of Victoria's High Country.

Mountain cattlemen first arrived to rest and graze their cattle in the 1800’s.

Whilst there is a permanent population (in 2022, the population was 127, down from 230 in 2016) the primary school operates in winter only. There are plenty of nature based activities to do, and in there is summer mountain biking and tennis. The popular Dinner Plain Polo event is held in January at Cobungra Station close by, and The Geebung’s take on the Cuff n Collars in a relaxed atmosphere at Australia’s longest-running polo event. Highlights of the year include dogsledding, cross country skiing and beginner alpine, and tobogganing in winter.
