Once a retreat for wealthy planters seeking refuge from the heat and disease that plagued the Lowcountry plantations throughout the summer months, the town of Bluffton, South Carolina has truly come into its own as a unique, charming community built upon its storied past. Incorporated in 1852, Bluffton was designated a National Register Historic District in 1996. We call it the Heart of the Lowcountry
In the Old Town Bluffton Historic District, the site selection and building styles vary greatly, but the earliest structures were largely influenced by climate, available resources, and popular architectural styles brought to North America by planters from the West Indies. The high bluff along the May River provided a perfect location with shaded lots on high ground, subject to cool breezes along the gentle curves of the May River. Simple housing designs emphasized elements like clapboard siding, brick pier foundations and chimneys, and porches, which served not only to temper buildings against sun exposure and gather breezes, but also provide an important social function as outdoor living spaces.
Taking a stroll to this cache's location is like walking back through time as pavement gives way to dirt road, soaring oak trees and historical homes. This cache is located very near the public parking for the public pocket park. It is not on private property. This is usually a quiet, peaceful spot, but there is some construction going on around cache site right now as one of the historical homes is being renovated. Cache is a small snap container with Town of Bluffton swag, a few other trinkets and a log book. Enjoy your beautiful day in Bluffton!
