Monastero di San Nicolò l'Arena un complesso ecclesiastico del centro storico di Catania, situato in piazza Dante, costituito da un importante edificio monastico benedettino e da una manumentale chiesa settecentesca.
Fu fondato da monaci provenienti dall'omonimo monastero situato nei pressi della città d Nicolosi che a metà del XVI secolo chiesero al senato cittadino l'autorizzazione a edificare entro le mura, poiché minacciati dalle eruzioni dell'Etna e dalla presenza di briganti.
Data la superficie occupata, circa 210 x 130 m., è ritenuto per estensione il secondo monastero benedettino più grande d'Europa (secondo solo al Monastero di Manfra in Portogallo).
Piazza Dante
Nella vicino piazza Dante è presente la Chiesa di San Nicolò l'Arena. Con una superficie di oltre 1500 m2 e un'altezza massima di circa 66 metri alla cupola, è la chiesa più grande della Sicilia. L'attuale edificio di culto, sorto posteriormente all'eruzione dell'Etna del 1669, sostituisce un più antico tempio rinascimentale.
Oggi è sede del Dipartimento di Scienze Umane (DiSUM) dell’Università degli Studi di Catania, ma è comunque aperto al pubblico per poterlo visitare grazie all'associzione Officine Culturali.
Le visite guidate si svolgono tutti i giorni dalle 10:00 alle 17:00.

The Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena in Catania, Sicily, is a former Benedictine monastery located at Piazza Dante 30. Together with the Palace of Mafra, it ranks among the largest Benedictine monasteries in Europe. Now part of the late Baroque ensemble of the Val di Noto, it houses the Department of Humanities of the University of Catania.
The monastery complex is located in the historical centre of the city of Catania, alongside the church of San Nicolò l'Arena. The structure integrates architectural styles from various centuries. Although founded in the 16th century, two natural disasters in the 17th century required major reconstruction.
The Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena is the largest monastery of Europe (after only to Manfra Monastry in Portogallo).
Dante Square
The square faces the façade of the unfinished San Nicolò l'Arena church. Behind and to the sides of the church stands the vast former Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena, which today houses the humanities department and the library of the University of Catania.
Nowadays it hosts the Department of Humanities (DISUM) of the University of Catania. You can still visit it thank to the Association Officine Culturali.
