Bucky and the Belleau Lake Bigfoot
As told to: Andrew Genzoli
Bucky Grigh had a heart as swampy and overgrown as the bank of Belleau Lake. He spent his days in a self-imposed exile, the rhythmic croaking of the frogs his only company. He had loved and lost, and the sting of it was a constant companion, a dull ache that made the vibrant greens of the swamp grass seem a little less bright. He was sitting on a fallen log, tossing pebbles into the murky water, when he saw her.
She was not what anyone would expect to see in Belleau Lake. She was a Bigfoot, but she moved with a quiet grace, her shaggy fur shimmering like moss in the late afternoon sun. Her eyes, a deep, gentle brown, were fixed on the water, and she seemed as melancholy as Bucky felt. A tiny, iridescent frog hopped from a lily pad and landed on her massive hand. She didn't flinch; she just watched it with a look of profound, shared sadness.
Bucky's heart, which had felt so hard and cold, softened. He stood up, and the rustle of the swamp grass caught her attention. She turned, and a flash of fear crossed her face before it was replaced by something else, something he knew all too well: loneliness. He held out his hand, palm up, in a gesture of peace. The frog on her hand gave a final croak and leaped back into the water.
Slowly, she moved toward him, her footsteps silent on the soft earth. She stopped just a few feet away. In the soft light, surrounded by the chorus of a thousand frogs, they just stood there, two lonely creatures, one man and one legend, looking into each other's eyes. It wasn't a romance born of words, but of silence and understanding. In that moment, Bucky knew he had found someone who understood the true meaning of a broken heart, and he no longer felt alone.
What was Bucky sitting on when he saw her?
